Old school hacks on high performance research systems in universities across the U.S. and Europe last month were prompting security experts to champion old school security best practices. A breach of Unix computing systems at Stanford University and other such institutions disrupted services to some researchers for days. TeraGrid, a supercomputing system funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), was affected by the breaches and reportedly went offline for several days while investigators checked for damage. Sang Kim, division director for Shared Cyber Infrastructure at the NSF, said an investigation is ongoing, but would not confirm those involved. He said that the NSF is concerned about sharing details on the attacks, because they "might make it that much more difficult to catch and prosecute the people responsible."
