IMO sets downloading deadline

The IMO has set a deadline of 1 July 2006 for VDRs and S-VDRs to be supplied with hardware and software to simplify downloading data by accident investigators (see box, below). The date was chosen to match the earliest S-VDR deadline (see SASI, April 2005, p14). June's meeting of the Maritime Safety Committee's (MSC's) Sub-Committee on Safety of Navigation (Nav 51) produced a circular containing the recommendations following an initiative taken by the MSC last December in a bid to clarify VDR analysis routines (Safety at Sea International, January 2005, p12).
