Lost in the sands of time

Half a century ago last month saw the tragic loss of LV90, The South Goodwin Light Vessel, off the UK's south east coast, in hurricane force winds, on the sands where it was anchored to protect other vessels from the fate that it suffered itself. And last month a memorial service was held on the spot where, even now, the ship lies buried in the treacherous Goodwin Sands. Safety at Sea International was privileged to join a small party of family members who lost relatives aboard the stricken light vessel and invited guests on 26 November aboard the Trinity House flagship Patricia. Also boarding the ship in Dover for the short run out to the South Goodwin Sands were Trinity House's deputy master Rear-Admiral Jeremy de Halpert, eider brother Capt Colin Stewart and Canon Stephen Hardie from Harwich.
