"Life-saving appliances kill more people than they save." That is the kind of remark that life-saving appliance (LSA) manufacturers have to confront all too often. It is, of course, inherently wrong, says Harry Klaverstijn, chairman of the technical committee of the International Life-saving Appliance Manufacturers' Association (ILAMA). "Manufacturers of life-saving appliances are very concerned with the incidents and accidents happening with LSA during training," he says. Every seafarer injured, or even killed, during training is unacceptable for any manufacturer, he insists.
