A pilot's life

It was an early start on a cold winter's morning. We were up at 05.00 and after a quick breakfast we left for the pilot station, which lies on the banks of the River Yare, arriving at 06.00. In general, there are six to 10 ship movements per day in and out of Great Yarmouth on the east coast of England. It is close to the large North Sea oil and gas fields and Paul Haysom is one of the marine pilots there. "There are two things a pilot requires," he says: "Local knowledge and ship-handling skills."
