Hail to SAFEDOR, long live SOLAS

SOLAS is safe: that is the crucial message from the four-year European research project known as SAFEDOR - Design, Operation and Regulation for Safety -which concluded with a two-day conference in London in April.rnSAFEDOR had set out to address what many see as shortcomings in SOLAS that impose restrictions on novel ship design concepts. Many observers had expected the project to lead to amendments to this piece of core IMO regulation, but Jeppe Juhl, an engineer with the Danish Maritime Authority, assured SASI that no changes would be needed to introduce the new approach.
