Unions and owners lobby for training funds

British seafarer unions and employers have joined forces to call on the UK government to support officer-training programmes, drawing attention to the Europe-wide maritime employment problem. In a letter sent in late March to Geoff Hoon, secretary of state at the Department for Transport, unions Nautilus UK and RMT, together with the Chamber of Shipping (CoS), said that it was "increasingly urgent... that essential seagoing skills in our island nation are preserved into the future".
