Turkey prides itself in being a country that straddles two continents, but it's becoming unnerved by the increasing tanker traffic in the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, the narrow straits that divide European from Asian Turkey and link the Black Sea with the Mediterranean. The devastating oil spill at the Gulf of Mexico rang alarm bells in Turkey and has prompted the government to step up its efforts to decongest the straits, particularly the Bosphorus: as its Turkish name, Istanbul Bogazl, indicates (bogazi means strait), on its shores lies Turkey's largest city, which has an estimated population of over 12M.
