Tankers hit and risk area extends

Pirates had hijacked two tankers within two weeks as SASI went to press, and the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) had extended its high-risk area for Somali pirate attacks farther into the Indian Ocean and north to Suez. There was some positive news as a vehicle carrier held for half a year was released. Pirates hijacked a Greek-owned chemical products tanker in the Red Sea, EU NAVFOR reported on 6 July. The Marshall Islands-flagged Motivator, with a crew of 18 Filipino nationals on board, reported on 5 July that it was being fired on in the Bab Al Mandeb, in the southern Red Sea between Yemen and Djibouti.
