Ship grounds as storms lash Chile

Cargo vessels ran aground in a severe storm on the central and southern coasts of Chile, IHS Global Insight reported on 7 July. Heavy rains caused infrastructure damage and disruption and necessitated closure of ports, according to the national emergency office, ONEMI, which reported one death. Ports were shut in San Antonio andrnValparaiso, where the 2,136gt cargo ship Cerro Alegre ran aground in the harbour. The Chilean Navy rescued the four people on board and no injuries were reported. The head of ONEMI's regional emergency office stated that no oil had been spilled.
