Social networking for safety's sake

For many people on shore, social networking has become as commonplace an online activity as any other. In some cases, it is replacing email as a preferred method of communication. The marine world is habitually slower to take up advances in communications because of the high cost and technical difficulty of introducing such systems to the maritime environment. Nevertheless, improved technology and communications have often led to safety innovations - and in its March 1974 issue, SASI marvelled at the usefulness that mailed video cassette recordings could have in improving accident reporting and onboard training.
