North Sea in September underlined different attitudes to funding responses to fires on ships in territorial waters. In the week that the UK government announced it would withdraw funding from its Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG), which since 2006 has been charged with co-ordinating fire response at sea, its Norwegian equivalent was dealing with a fatal fire on the coastal ro-pax Nordlys (see page 8 for more details).The reaction to that incident "was a brilliant example of good response, as far as RITs [rapid intervention teams] is concerned", SASI was told by Jan Helge Kaiser, an adviser to Norway's Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning.
