Fatigue to blame for collision

A master's fatigue led to the collision of a container ship and a trawler in the English Channel earlier this year, UK accident investigators reported in September. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch report detailed how the box ship's master had not slept for more than 24 hours before the collision, which, it said, had contributed to his "poor situational awareness". The 2,500teu Boxford, sailing from Antwerp to Gioia Tauro, Italy, hit the stern of the trawler Admiral Blake in the evening of 11 February, throwing overboard two men, who were later rescued.
