Crew safety scrutinised

The increasing violence of Somali pirates and their growing willingness to seize not only merchant vessels but also private yachts, has intensified the spotlight on crew safety in the region. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) warned on 25 February that shipping companies might face accusations of corporate manslaughter if they continue to route vessels through waters frequented by pirates. The organisation said it was moving closer to having to advise seafarers to consider avoiding working in all the affected areas, including the Indian Ocean.
