Great Britain, built in 1843 to provide luxury travel from the UK to the USA, was the first iron-hulled propeller-driven ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It was designed by the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunei, who envisaged passengers being able to buy a ticket from London and travel all the way to New York with just one change - from railway to ship at the terminal in Wales. It was an astonishing achievement.
