Use personnel selection criteria that employ enhanced maritime English language tests, such as those offered by the EU (MarTEL) and the International Shipping Federation (via Marlins). Stage regular and realistic onboard emergency drills that allow all crew members to become familiar with using English in dynamic critical situations, which would then be followed by debriefing sessions to foster dialogue and highlight the terminology used. Where necessary, clear and unambiguous marking of equipment such as valves and control levers to reinforce positive identification of items outlined in verbal or written instructions.
