In recent months piracy off Somali has largely been kept under control but increasing attacks off West Africa underline the fact it has become an occupational hazard for seafarers in certain parts of the world. Now the Nautical Institute (NI) has published a practical guide to help seafarers and professionals working ashore in the security business to cope with this crime. The NI said it hopes the Coping with Piracy handbook by Steven Jones can play its part "in bringing attention back where it deserves to be - on the plight of seafarers whether actually in the hands of criminals or facing that threat". It added: "The author can speak with authority as Jones had the misfortune to be attacked by pirates during his seafaring career." The handbook complements the NI book Maritime Security: A Practical Guide, also by Jones. In his introduction Jones claimed most experts agree that in the long term the war against piracy will be won ashore, but in the meantime the battles are taking place out at sea. This brings with it unique challenges to protect vessels, provide training and deliver a stream of usable and timely intelligence and data.
