African leaders meeting in Cameroon have urged the formation of a naval force to patrol the Gulf of Guinea that would mirror the EU NAVFOR mission off Somalia, IHS Global Insight has reported. Speaking at a meeting of West and Central African leaders in Yaounde, Cameroon, on 24 June Ivory Coast's President Alassane Ouattara called for the international community "to show the same firmness in the Gulf of Guinea as displayed in the Gulf of Aden". He noted that in that case "the presence of international naval forces has helped to drastically reduce acts of piracy".
