Portrait of the future

An aviation-inspired project to improve dynamic and proactive route planning is being trialled in the Baltic Sea and it has provoked both optimism and controversy, writes John Pagni. For several years the European Union has been aiming to cut carbon emissions by getting as much freight as possible to its destination by sea rather than road. With this in mind it is keen to get a head of steam up for its Motorways of the Sea (MotS) concept, an initiative that is itself a part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) project.
