More than 2,000 exhibitors and 50,000 industry visitors will convene upon the Hamburg Messe exhibition centre in Germany from 9-12 September for SMM, the biannual maritime trade expo. Despite the economic crisis of 2008 and subsequent decline in global shipbuilding production, the event has continued to grow over the past decade. Industry experts have attributed this to factors such as pending regulatory changes, and niche markets such as the burgeoning offshore sector. Maritime equipment suppliers, a sector still dominated by European companies, have capitalised on these changes.
