The West of England P&I Club and the UK P&I Club have both issued advisory guidance on the risks of nickel ore liquefaction following an incident concerning Malaysian Bulk Carriers' Supramax bulker Alam Manis, which listed three days after loading nickel ore in Surigao, Philippines. The vessel was en route to Li-anyungang, China, after loading the cargo in Surigao. The nickel ore carried on Alam Manis is believed to have liquefied amid stormy weather when the ship was about 225 n miles southeast of Taiwan. Although the ship headed for a port of refuge after Maybulk affiliate POSH Semco despatched a salvage tug to assist, the listing worsened and all 21 crew members were evacuated. However, chief mate Henry Libo-on suffered a heart attack and died during the evacuation.
