Ethiopians flock to officer school

The Ethiopian Maritime Training Institute (EMTI) was set up in 2010 to train the country's next generation of mechanical and electrical officers at its state-of-the-art facility located in Bahir Dar, on Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. The institute has qualified over one-thousand officers to date, the majority of them now posted on commercial cargo vessels in Germany and Greece, and interest is on the increase, with about six applicants for every postgraduate place on courses starting this September.
