Infrared cameras used by seafarers to fight vessel fires are getting smaller, less expensive, and more advanced - a great combination for saving lives. However, while such technology improvements are important for seafarer firefighting training, relying too heavily on them would be a mistake, one of the leading shipboard fire safety experts in the United States insists. "In the old days, when I took a hose to put out a fire, I'd have to crawl through on my hands and knees, looking to see if I could find a glow, and use my hands to find victims because I couldn't see," Cliff Charlock, manager of the fire school at Resolve Maritime Academy, told IHS Maritime. "Now, these cameras use the same concept as night vision, except they give you a lot better picture, and can mean the difference between life and death."
