Technology to the rescue

In the wake of an emergency at sea, it is often the case that seafarers have to rely on search and rescue (SAR) efforts to survive. These activities depend on the active deployment of a wide range of technologies to facilitate recovery, including, where appropriate, sophisticated side-scanning sonar equipment to search underwater. EdgeTech, a Massachusetts-based manufacturer of underwater solutions, has recently brought to the market a magnetometer interface for use with its lightweight portable 4125 Side Scan Sonar. This allows the 4125 sonar to complete both a side scan sonar and magnetometer survey at the same time which means that a given search area can be comprehensively covered, using both methods, in approximately half the time it takes at present.
