Abandoning the United Kingdom's present method of supporting cadet training could save the country's shipping industry a large amount of money, it has been claimed. Plymouth University lecturer Captain Robert Hone has advocated the self-funding of nautical training through foundation degrees. Writing in the Nautical Institute's journal Seaways, Hone said such an approach could reduce the cost of training for shipping companies at times when there is pressure for increased spending on officer training.
