Safety at sea begins on shore

Accidents cost lives and waste money. It is in everyone's interest that the industry understands why accidents happen: not just the immediate cause but the several underlying layers of cause. Insurers are at the forefront of this. Time and again they identify the key to reducing the number of casualties the establishment of a sustainable safety culture both on shore and on board. So why do insurers such as The Swedish Club have to restate the need for an entire organisation to be committed to casualty prevention? Simple, short-term actions as part of a safety culture are proven to enhance commercial operations, improve safety for the crew, and minimise environmental damage. There are many reasons why a company's safety culture falls short of the safety manager's objectives but the one reason that is rarely spoken about is that safety, operations, crew management, and administration are viewed as different business divisions, each with its own problems to be tackled. In reality, they are all sides to the same coin.
