Increasing numbers of fires sparked in holds of bulkers by external heat sources have raised concerns among shipowners, who are consulting fire prevention experts. According to Yrjo Migchelsen, marine fire investigator at BMT Surveys, several external heat sources on dry bulkers can start fires. These include halogen hold lighting, heated fuel-oil bunker tanks, poor electrical wiring, carelessly discarded cigarettes, and hot repair work above the holds.
