The safety low-down on low-sulphur fuel

As of 1 January 2015, MARPOL Annex VI regulations came into force, placing stricter controls on sulphur emissions (SO_x) in emission control areas (ECAs), requiring all ships sailing in them to switch from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to ultra-low-sulphur gasoil (ULSGO), containing a maximum sulphur content of 0.10%.
