On an early August morning in 2014, the workers at Tilbury docks in Essex, UK, were not expecting the banging and screaming they heard coming from a container that had just arrived on a ferry from Zeebrugge, Belgium. Inside it were 35 adults and children of Indian descent, suspected to be illegal immigrants, all of whom were suffering from the effects of confinement: little air, food, or water. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and the others were taken to three different hospitals.
