Against a background of issues arising from the use of very-low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) to comply with the new IMO 0.50% sulphur limit in marine fuels, the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has released a training module for its online bunker course on VLSFO compatibility and stability. In addition, a second module looks at sales terms and conditions. An IBIA representative said that its new "Module 6 compatibility and stability -issues with VLSFO fuels and the measurement of stability" was intended to deliver an understanding of the physics of mixtures, the concept of stability, and the available test methods to assess if fuel components will form a stable blend. The module also covers available test methods to determine if fuels are stable, including laboratory-only tests and sensible precautions for storage and treatment. VLSFO is the most widely adopted solution to meeting the 0.50% sulphur limit.
