Illegal trade possible cause of deadly Black Sea tanker fires

The Russian government has blamed economic sanctions placed on some commercial ships as the underlying reason for the deadly fires that broke out on two Tanzanian-flagged tankers in the Black Sea in January. LPG tankers Maestro and Candy caught fire on 21 January 2019,15 km south of Takyl Cape in Russia while carrying out a ship-to-ship LNG transfer during stormy conditions mid-sea, according to the Russian government's Federal Marine and River Transport Agency.
