Sustained attack on health and safety follows guilty verdict in Menezes case

In last month's issue, we asked: will the Menezes police trial help or hinderthe H&S cause? Based on the frenzy of comment that erupted after the verdict was announced, the answer would seem to be the latter. On 1 November, the jury at the Old Bailey found the Metropolitan Police guilty under section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act of failing to protect members of the public while pursuing and fatally shooting Jean Charles de Menezes in July 2005. The force was fined £175,000 and ordered to pay £385,000 in costs.
