Tackling the two-faced response to risk

We're fast losing our ability to take sensible risks in today's Britain. Tickbox management and the popular ridicule of health and safety practice have engendered widespread confusion and a worrying lack of confidence in deciding what is and isn't safe.rnThat was the central tenet of a lecture delivered at the British Library in November by Professor Neil Budworth, a former IOSH president and leading health and safety practitioner. Much of it anticipated what David Cameron had to say about a 'blame culture' a few weeks later, when he addressed the Policy Exchange think-tank (see the News section of this issue).
