In September, His Honour Judge Peter Thornton QC - who conducted the recent high-profile inquest into the death of Ian Tomlinson at the London G20 protests in 2009 - was appointed to the newly-created role of Chief Coroner. Describing the appointment, the then Justice Secretary, Ken Clarke, highlighted the full range of powers that will be available "to drive up standards... and to tackle delays within the system".
