Early warning

There is a long-established principle in sentencing that recognises a defendant who has pleaded guilty to an offence should receive a reduced sentence. The nearer to trial the plea of guilty is indicated, the smaller the reduction. Section 144 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 provides that a judge must take account of the stage and circumstances in which the guilty plea was entered.
