The driver's steering behavior during lane departure warnings was investigated. In a warning condition where pulse-like steering torque was presented for avoidance of lane departure, the maximum lateral deviation was larger than when an acoustic warning was presented. This result reflects the fact that some of the drivers turned the steering wheel in the opposite direction to compensate for the steering torque generated by the warning system. This incorrect strategy in the pulse-like steering torque warning was observed when drivers were not fully aware of the meaning of the warnings and also when drivers should understand the meaning of the warnings after test-driving with the warning system.
