Dynamics of Moisture Storage in Soil from Observation Data in the Valdai Hills

A preliminary analysis of information on stored soil moisture from data of multi-year (more than 20 years) observations at an experimental catchment area in the Valdai Hills is presented. A summary of the values of the hydrophysical parameters of the soil under investigation is presented. The annual cycle, frequency, and multi-year fluctuations of the stored soil moisture as well as their spatial variability are investigated. A calculation of the water balance of the catchment area is given together with an assessment of the relative role of variations in the stored soil moisture.
