From special aircraft observations over a thermally inhomogeneous surface, empirical relations have been obtained between characteristics of mesoscale temperature perturbations of the underlying surface, on the one hand, and the amplitude of temperature and wind perturbations in the atmospheric boundary layer, on the other. The relations are used to estimate the influence of sea-surface temperature anomalies on the state of the marine atmospheric boundary layer for different background conditions (vertical atmospheric and wind speed stability) that occur in different parts of cyclones and anticyclones.
