In mid-September 2006, Russia decided to dispatch a reconnaissance force to Lebanon in order to deploy an engineering battalion in a matter of weeks. The decision prompted one of Russia's most respected newspapers to speak of a 'Pristina dash into Lebanon' -evoking the incident when Russian forces took control of Pristina Airport in Kosovo to the surprise of the coalition they were supposed to form part of. The battalion, however, will not be part of the UN peace-keeping mission to Lebanon.
