Delivering Naval Capability through Smart Acquisition: The UK's Type 45 Destroyer Programme

All of us in the defence community are now seeing clear evidence that we are putting behind us the problems surrounding defence procurement in the past. By working closely together, the military customer, the procurement agency and industry are beginning to reap the benefits of collectively addressing the issues and applying the lessons learned to new procurement programmes. I believe the Type 45 Destroyer programme is a prime example of this new approach. In this programme we have a real opportunity to deliver significant naval capability while at the same time putting the principles of Smart Acquisition to work in practice and -of great importance for industry but indeed also for future capability -retaining the technological base and intellectual as well as physical capacities to deliver evermore sophisticated vessels in the future.
