Sustainability is a worthy and important aim, but are we agreed on what it means? The view from the RSA is that society has not yet found one compelling definition, without which we cannot pursue the goal of Sustainability with as much conviction and focused energy as it requires. For this reason, the RSA has initiated a project to investigate the need for a clear vision in this area and thereby contribute to a healthy change in policy effectiveness. The initiative was prompted by two Fellows, Professor Charles Ainger and Michael King, who were worried that progress was far too slow in this area. The many definitions of Sustainability, they believe, make it difficult to align skills and insights towards a common goal. The fact that the UK government uses 15 headline indicators, broken down into more than 150 individual subsidiary indicators to explain Sustainability, underlines the need for a much clearer message to come through.
