DEVELOPING AN EFFECTIVE ROAD MANAGEMENT SYSTEM- COOPERATION BETWEEN ROAD AUTHORITIES IN DENMARK

VIS (Road information System) is based on many years of collaboration between the Road Directorate and the Counties on registration and maintenance of the necessary database for the principal road network. VIS contains the most important data on roads and traffic on State and County roads. The information is registered in the same way regardless of who collects or updates it, and all data are identified by a road number and a kilometerage based on the white kilometer markers at the edge of the road. This article describes the background, the advantages of collaboration, and a description of the appropriate organization. Collaboration is most successful when the task a hand is well understood.
