GAMMA-RAY BURSTS - A CRITICAL REVIEW

We present a short general introduction to the field of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) research, summarizing the past and the present status. We give an ensemble view of the GRBs observations to date, both in the prompt emission phase and in the afterglow phase, and a brief primer into the theory, mainly in the framework of the fireball model.
