Having been involved with utility installation under city streets and residential roadways as well as through woods and fields in the countryside, the first thing that comes to my mind is collapsing trenches. Thank God for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Before OSHA came up with safety standards for trench excavation and pipe installation shoring - required for any trench over 5 feet deep - many men got buried in collapsed trenches. Trench boxes that are pulled along by the backhoe - as the bedding, pipe and backfill are completed - are still the most common form of trench shoring. The contractor frequently rents these boxes. Trenches can still collapse. To help us out, Speed Shore has come up with an innovative hydraulic trench rescue shoring system. Of course, the best technology for eliminating burying men in trenches is trenchless technology.
