The construction sector-and the people who build America's homes, office buildings, roads and bridges-bore the brunt of the Great Recession. Construction spending fell by one-quarter from the peak of the cycle in early 2006. As a result, total construction sector employment fell by 1.8 million jobs from December 2007 to December 2009. That's a 24% decline, compared to the 6% decline in employment for the country as a whole. The result is that unemployment in the construction sector stands at 20%, more than twice the overall national figure.
