We recently wrote to MP Kit Malthouse, calling for thefts of lorry cargo to be given their own designation, separate from other vehicle crimes. Our letter to Mr Malthouse, the Minister of State for Crime and Policing, highlighted the way in which theft from HGVs is a significant and growing problem, as well as the associated losses, which are substantial. In January and February 2021, the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS) recorded 443 thefts valued at £9.4 million, an average loss of over £21,000 per incident. The current categorisation of lorry load theft means that these crimes are in the same category as the theft of a pair of sunglasses from a motor vehicle.
