Q. What is Occupational Health? A. Occupational Health (OH) is the process of identifying and managing ANY health condition which affects a person's ability to perform their role or which affects their ability to attend work. OH also helps identify ill health caused or exacerbated by work, and recommends adjustments to mitigate these risks. The total cost of workplace injuries and ill health to the UK economy is estimated to be £15 billion per year with the most common health conditions cited as mental health (anxiety, depression, stress) and back or musculoskeletal pain. Q. How should I manage employees with health problems? A. If your business has an appointed HR manager, or you are using an independent HR advisory service, the first port of call should be to speak with them and get advice on how to approach the issue. If the employee is claiming that they cannot work or may need adjustments due to health issues, then they may advise that you need to ask a doctor to complete a medical report.
