The Latest Developments in Mobility as a Service in the United States Progress as of 2019

Since the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) was defined in 2014 by Sonja Heikkilä~1, several U.S. transportation agencies have explored the potential of creating MaaS. While significant opportunities and challenges regarding MaaS in the U.S. were identified in 2016~2, MaaS systems are beginning to be developed. Agencies are deploying technologies and creating the partnerships with mobility service providers that are required to provide the basis for full-featured MaaS systems. This article will describe the progress that has been made in the U.S. by reviewing the definition of MaaS in the U.S.; providing examples from agencies that are deploying MaaS; describing where these systems fall within the MaaS topology3; and proposing a "MaaS Balance" that could be considered in the deployment of MaaS generally.
