Vancouver's Protected Intersections

For over two decades, Vancouver's transportation policy has prioritized walking, cycling and transit over car trips. In 2012, this was accelerated by the adoption of Transportation 2040, Vancouver's long-term transportation plan, which aimed to have half of all trips be by foot, bike and transit by 2020, and two-thirds of all trips by 2040. The Metro Vancouver region is growing rapidly and expects to see a million new people in the next 30 years.The 2/3 walk/bike/transit goal responds to this growth as it essentially means that all trip growth within Vancouver needs to be walk/bike/transit. Vancouver City Council recently moved this target up to 2030, in recognition that the world is in a climate emergency.
