There is no off-season when it comes to maintaining the roads of the village of Westmont, Ill. This western Chicago suburb has 80 miles of road that require repair in the summer and need to be kept clean of snow in the winter. The two crews of West-mont's Public Works Department's Street Division have a valuable and versatile tool to help perform this maintenance throughout the year-a Bobcat S300 skid-steer loader. Many of the streets in Westmont are paved with an asphalt overlay on a concrete base. Should a water main or sewer line need repair, the S300 with a hydraulic breaker attachment is used to demolish the asphalt and the concrete. "We haven't used an air hammer in ages," said Joe Barrett, a supervisor of one of the Street Division crews for the Westmont Public Works Department. "The S300 has high-flow auxiliary hydraulics that makes the breaker attachment a powerful tool in getting through the concrete base of the streets and the rebar in the concrete."
